Air Quality in the Region of Murcia

The Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Unit is traveling to 11 municipalities this year after its complete upgrade and equipment update.
The Federation of Municipalities has collaborated in compiling the list of towns and cities to be included in this air quality measurement route.

Good morning, I was able to attend Science Week in person and visit the mobile unit, which is equipped with very advanced equipment. The explanation of how this equipment works was very interesting. The outreach and attendance of teenagers was very important, as their participation is crucial for them to understand the impact of air quality and to be able to implement measures within their reach to improve the air quality in their communities, such as promoting and using public transportation, walking, and using mobility devices like bicycles. Every individual action, no matter how small, contributes to improving the air quality in your city.

Does Christmas lighting in cities pollute?
Christmas lights, while beautifying cities and fostering a festive spirit, generate a significant increase in energy consumption, as they are typically switched on from 6 p.m. until midnight for over a month. Since much of the electricity still comes from fossil fuels, this increase also leads to additional carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, except when the energy used comes from renewable sources.

As far as I'm concerned, the short answer is yes, they pollute just like any machine or device that uses energy and raw materials to operate. It remains to be seen how much they do (20,000 LEDs in an hour consume roughly as much as a single electric car to cover one kilometer). But the reasoned answer is that it's a trap topic. Christmas lights belong to a tradition deeply rooted in our culture. Introducing the topic of their impact would give voice to the vulgar debate according to which the EU, environmentalists, and pacifists want to erase Western identity. Generally speaking, this is a central critical issue in the political and public acceptance of the energy/environmental transition; we cannot ignore it if we want to break out of the bubble.
