GreenMe5 invites local councils to participate in the Climate Action Day in Cieza with a practical initiative to create butterfly gardens

Within the framework of the European Climate Pact's Climate Action Days, the LIFE GreenMe5 project is organizing a special event in Cieza (Murcia, Spain) on March 24, 2026, which will bring together municipalities and stakeholders committed to advancing climate action through nature-based solutions.

This Green Innovation Camp will focus on biodiversity, urban greening, and climate resilience, offering a unique opportunity for knowledge exchange among European cities such as Murcia, Cieza, Arezzo, Vilnius, and Helsingborg. The program will include expert presentations, technical discussions, and field visits to local rewilding initiatives.

The heart of the event is a hands-on activity: the creation of a butterfly garden in Príncipe de Asturias Park. Participants will collaborate on transforming a traditional lawn area—characterized by high water consumption—into a resilient green space with low-water-demand vegetation and pollinator-friendly species. This initiative will contribute to biodiversity conservation, improve ecological connectivity, and showcase practical solutions for reducing water use in urban environments.

Through this initiative, GreenMe5 highlights how cities can address climate challenges by integrating nature-based solutions that improve ecosystem services while reducing resource consumption.

We cordially invite municipalities throughout the Region of Murcia—especially those already part of the Green Cities Pact or interested in joining—to participate in this event. It is an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences, discover replicable solutions, and strengthen collaboration at both the regional and European levels.

By participating in Climate Action Day in Cieza, municipalities will not only gain practical knowledge about sustainable urban landscaping, but will also contribute to a common commitment to building cities that are more resilient to climate change and respectful of biodiversity.
