As far as I’m concerned, the short answer is yes, they pollute just like any machine or device that uses energy and raw materials to operate. It remains to be seen how much they do (20,000 LEDs in an hour consume roughly as much as a single electric car to cover one kilometer). But the reasoned answer is that it’s a trap topic. Christmas lights belong to a tradition deeply rooted in our culture. Introducing the topic of their impact would give voice to the vulgar debate according to which the EU, environmentalists, and pacifists want to erase Western identity. Generally speaking, this is a central critical issue in the political and public acceptance of the energy/environmental transition; we cannot ignore it if we want to break out of the bubble.
